How the patch works

When you wear a patch, small safe amounts of nicotine are released into your blood through your skin. This helps take the edge off of nicotine withdrawal symptoms.

For success with the patch, you need to apply a new one every day for 8 weeks. Stopping sooner reduces your likelihood of success.

How to use the Habitrol nicotine patch

  • Apply the patch to a clean, dry, non-hairy area of skin (either upper body or outer arm).
  • Use 1 fresh patch each day and keep it on for 24 hours.
  • After 24 hours, take off the patch and put a brand new one on. Put it on a different place on your skin.
  • Read the Habitrol package insert for more information on the proper use of the nicotine patch.

Common side effects

The most common side effect of the patch is skin irritation. A slight amount of redness or itchiness is normal and should get better after a few days. You can use cream or lotion to soothe the irritation. Put the patch on a different spot each day. Read the package insert to learn about other side effects.

If you have any serious negative side effects or your health condition changes (e.g., you become pregnant or start a new medication), please stop using the patch and see your doctor.

How the gum works

Using the gum helps take the edge of nicotine withdrawal symptoms. The gum delivers a fast, safe dose of nicotine to help deal with cravings.

For success with the gum, you need to use the gum every time you have a craving for 8 weeks. Stopping sooner reduces your likelihood of success.

How to use Thrive nicotine gum

  • Chew 1 piece of gum when you have a craving to smoke.
  • Chew the gum 2-3 times until flavour is strong, and then rest it between your cheek and gum until the taste fades.
  • Repeat with the same piece of gum for 30 minutes.
  • Use 1 piece of gum at a time and do not use more than 20 pieces per day.
  • Refer to the Thrive package insert for more information on the proper use of the nicotine gum.

The table below shows a guide for how many pieces of gum you should be using every day to quit smoking. It is based on the number of cigarettes you used to smoke per day.

Number of cigarettes smoked per day Weeks 1-2

Common side effects

The most common side effect of the gum is upset stomach. This can happen when the gum is chewed too quickly or incorrectly. Avoid drinking alcohol and other acidic beverages (e.g., coffee, tea, soft drinks, and citrus juices) when chewing Thrive gum. They can prevent the gum from working properly. Read the package insert to learn about other side effects.

If you have any serious negative side effects or your health condition changes (e.g., you become pregnant or start a new medication), please stop using the gum and see your doctor.
